The BEAR Winnowing machines are applied for the breaking and de-hulling of cocoa beans. The beans are fed to the bean breaker by a feeding elevator. The broken beans enter the winnower as a mixture of shells and kernels (nibs) by vibration conveying. The mixture is fed over a series of sieve surfaces and are splitted into different size fractions. Each fraction pass a suction channel where the lighter shell particles are extracted from the nibs. The shells are eventually separated from the air flow in an air chamber where the decreased air velocity make the shell fall down in open discharge screw conveyors. Oversized nibs and unbroken beans are sorted out and are passed on to be broken a second time. The sorted nibs leave the machine on the side. The shells are being brought out on the opposite machine side.
